My project is: ‘Fuel retention in plasma facing materials of the JET-ITER like wall.’  During my project I will be studying Beryllium using a combination of techniques such as Thermal Desorption spectroscopy and Focused Ion Beam to analyse the microstructure, composition and temperatures at which retained fuel is removed from the wall material. Beryllium has been chosen as the wall material for ITER. However since the conversion of carbon walls to all metal walls, recorded tokamak performance has fallen. This is very concerning to the performance predictions for ITER and as such there is a deficit in research discussing the plasma wall interactions in beryllium.
