Excellent attendance at Culham Open Day

Each year the Fusion CDT collaborates with Culham Centre for Fusion Energy to organise a Postgraduate student open day at Culham Centre for Fusion Energy in Oxfordshire. While Fusion is the headline topic, this spans many research areas that encompass plasma physics, materials science, instrumentation and advanced engineering/technologies. It links to fields as diverse as astrophysics, advanced manufacturing and nuclear energy.

This year’s event took place on Wednesday 7th December 2016. Attendance by students interested in these research areas was excellent and the day had a real ‘buzz’ about it. Students, academics and existing postgraduates came together to discuss their research and the opportunities that will be available for students in 2017/8. For more information on the projects available with the Fusion CDT please see our ‘Study with us‘ pages.

Exceptional talks were given by the speakers on the day which included:

  • Prof Ian Chapman, CEO Atomic Energy Authority and Director Culham Centre for Fusion Energy;
  • Dr Roddy Vann, Programme Director for the Fusion CDT;
  • Prof Tony Arber, Warwick University;
  • Dr David Armstrong, Oxford University;
  • Dr Elizabeth Surrey, CCFE Technology Department Manager.

If you didn’t make it to the open day, the slides from Professor Ian Chapman’s introductory talk are available here. Dr Roddy Vann spoke on the subject of magnetic fusion plasmas and the Fusion CDT and his slides are available here.
